Marlpit Community Garden

Last week I made a visit to the incredible Marlpit Community Garden (MCG) to meet Rose, one of the trustees. She walked me through the entire setting and it was fantastic to see the range of fruit, vegetables and other plants they have growing. Marlpit Community Garden is a hidden gem in Norwich. Established in June 2013, this seven-acre site is more than just a collection of allotments—it’s a thriving, volunteer-run hub for sustainable growing, biodiversity, and community spirit. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a curious visitor, read on to see how you can get involved!

Marlpit Community Garden is a space designed for individuals, families, schools, and community groups, all coming together to grow in their own plots. Walking through the garden, you’ll find a mix of individual growing spaces, a flourishing orchard, a forest garden, wildflower meadows, an apiary, and even a dedicated herb garden. It’s a place where nature and people work together to make something special!

For those who might not have the physical ability to tend to a large plot, MCG also offers raised boxes—an accessible option for growing your own produce. Membership costs are affordable, with annual fees starting at £33 for a single plot and £23 for a raised box, ensuring that gardening remains within reach for everyone.

What makes MCG special is its strong emphasis on community involvement. Unlike a traditional allotment site, MCG relies entirely on volunteers to keep the space running smoothly. As a plot-holder, you’re encouraged to contribute at least three days per year towards the maintenance of communal areas and facilities. This sense of shared responsibility creates a unique and welcoming atmosphere where everyone has an impact on the garden’s success.

Whether you’re interested in growing your own food, learning more about sustainable gardening, or simply looking for a peaceful green space to explore, MCG has something to offer. As you stroll through the different areas of the garden, you’ll notice the incredible variety of plants, the gentle hum of bees from the apiary, and the vibrant colours of the wildflower meadows. It’s a place where you can truly reconnect with nature and the local community.

If you’re considering becoming a member, the process is simple, and with a small key deposit of £20, you’ll have year-round access to this beautiful space. And if you’re not ready to commit to a plot, why not volunteer and experience the garden first-hand?

Marlpit Community Garden isn’t just about growing plants—it’s about growing community, sustainability, and well-being. Whether you come with a trowel in hand or just a love for nature, MCG is a place where everyone is welcome.
